Ever since I was a child, dairy gave me an issue despite how much I love it. Seriously, I could eat cheese and drink mugs of milk with every meal if I was given the opportunity. Unfortunately, my stomach can’t handle it and I’ve been lactose intolerant for as long as I can remember.

Back in the day, my parents didn’t have the internet at their disposal to tap into a wealth of information on how to build up a tolerance for certain foods and ingredients. So, I completely understand why they felt like lactose intolerance was not treatable!

I, for one, accepted it. I knew that every time I over did it with dairy, I’d suffer all sorts of problems. We’ll get into that in a moment. Weirdly enough, over the last month, we made a small change in our household to further repair our gut. Because I suffered from cystic acne and psoriasis in the past, I tried my best to steer far away from dairy because it always aggravated my skin conditions.

Unexpectedly, the change we made in our diet resulted in my gut being able to break down and digest dairy without any issues. For the first time in my life, I devoured a large ice cream on Saturday night and felt absolutely NOTHING!

What The Hell Is Lactose Intolerance?

Essentially, dairy contains a form of sugar known as lactose that requires a special enzyme known as Lactase to break it down and digest it. When your gut has a poor supply of lactase, it is unable to digest this specific type of sugar present in milk thus causing all sorts of GI problems.

Some of the symptoms of Lactose Intolerance are:

  • Bloating and Swelling
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Acid Reflux
  • Acne, psoriasis, eczema and other skin condition flare ups
  • And so on;

None of these symptoms should be taken lightly. They can last from anywhere between an hour to a couple of days. It truly is horrible.

Apart from nausea, I’d experience every one of the above-mentioned symptoms without fail.
Ironically, this past Saturday night (15th July 2017), I was able to eat ice cream (loads of it) without a single symptom at all! I went into my ice cream escapade with full knowledge of the repercussions and I waited for the symptoms to happen, except, they never showed up.

Sunday came and went without a single issue. So did Monday and Tuesday! Absolutely nothing.

The Unexpected Solution To My Lactose Intolerance

A month prior to this ice cream experience, we came across Lactose-Free milk at our local store and decided to make the switch. It didn’t bother us at all and we could finally enjoy some dairy again without ramifications.

What I hadn’t realized is that though this milk was marketed as ‘lactose-free’ and titled No-Lac, it actually still had lactose in it. What it’s enriched with is Lactase which essentially provides the gut with enough enzymes to break down the lactose in the milk.

Evidently, because I was consuming the lactase enzyme on a daily basis now (I even used it in my protein shake), I believe my gut built up enough lactase to break down dairy which is why I had absolutely no problem digesting typically processed ice cream!

I’m obviously not claiming that this is a cure for Lactose Intolerance but it certainly made a difference in my life.

I’m still drinking the ‘lactose-free’ milk on a daily basis and I’ll be doing another test very soon.

Speak to your doctor and perhaps attempt to repopulate your gut with lactase by drinking milk enriched with lactase!

A Plan Of Action

In the event of you wanting to try this out, I suggest ruling out an allergy to dairy first.

If you’re just intolerant to milk, start introducing a source of lactase into your diet on a daily basis. When you’ve done this for a few weeks, try introducing a bit of ordinary dairy into your diet.

Depending on your experience, you can gage whether or not you’ve built up the ability to break down lactose in bigger quantities or not.

Try to opt for milk enriched with lactase and Vitamin D. That’s what worked well for me and it might work for you too. I know some people and professionals are of the opinion that by simply reintroducing normal dairy into your diet, as time goes on, you’ll learn how to digest it. I just find this to be way too daunting of an experience given that the symptoms act up so quickly in my system.

This approach seems to have worked far better for me and I’m so glad we made the switch.

It costs about a dollar or 2 more per liter but the results have been more than worth it. Especially since I never expected it to fix my lactose intolerance!

Whether this is a permanent solution to lactose intolerance or not will be something I hope researchers spend more time finding out. I’m sure, as medical science advances and more companies are held responsible for how they treat animals, things will improve. Until then, we’re better off spending an extra few dollars to consume healthy variations of our favorite foods and products.

With that being said, let me know your experience with lactose intolerance and whether any of you have noted an improvement in your lactose intolerance after consuming lactase on a daily basis!
