Junk food is addictive. At every turn, we are bombarded with options of fried foods, processed meats, sugar-laden snacks and beverages packed with caffeine. They taste great but they are destructive to our health and well being. Ever since starting this blog, I’ve been experimenting with different food choices and recording how my body reacts to them.

If you don’t know, I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis a few years ago and healed myself through lifestyle changes rather than the typical chronic medications offered to me (always consult a doctor or trained medical professional before trying anything health related). I was successful and put my autoimmune diseases into remission.

But, it took years of hard work and dedication. But, I wanted to find out what would happen if I returned to a diet filled with oily greasy foods, sugar and processed meats.

Within the space of 3 months, this is what happened to my body: 

  • I gained over 5 kgs of fat.
  • Lost muscle mass.
  • Suffered from acid reflux.
  • Experienced both scalp psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis flare-ups.
  • Endured brain fog and fatigue.
  • Hormonal imbalances that triggered bouts of demotivation and even depression.

The last time I felt this horrible was back in 2015, before I got diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis or changed my lifestyle.

The amount of inflammation and damage caused to my intestinal lining from consuming horrible foods is nothing less than eye-opening! I chose to do this experiment because I wanted to prove to myself and to my readers that diet matters more so than what people claim.

With that being said, I’m planning a 4 week cleanse and returning to my healthy diet in hopes of experiencing the wonderful benefits it has to offer. I’ll be sure to update you in November 2017 to share my results so do keep an eye out for that.

So, here’s my 5 ways to cleanse your body of toxins and inflammation within 4 weeks.

1. Remove Junk Food And Replace It With Vegetables, Fruits, Healthy Meats, Nuts And Seeds 

I strongly believe that what we eat becomes a part of us. It affects the way we think, feel and look which is why people who eat so unhealthily think negatively, feel horrible and look unfit.

Everything you consume consists of ingredients which react a certain way within your body.

Vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds are packed with essential vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy and strong body whereas junk food consists of ingredients like sugar and hydrogenated fats that cause inflammation, destruction of the gut lining, hormonal imbalances and so forth.

With any cleanse, you have to reduce negative elements from your diet and replace them with healthy alternatives.

Replace unhealthy fats with healthy fats like avocados and nuts, deli meats with fresh antibiotic-free meats, conventional dairy with organic healthy dairy and sugar with natural alternatives like honey and fruits.

2. Consume Loads Of Antioxidant & AntiInflammatory Rich Beverages 

When you eat unhealthy foods for a long space of time, free radicals are produced within your body. These free radicals are known to damage healthy cells and cause a host of health conditions.

As it turns out, antioxidants block and destroy free radicals which is why the consumption of green teas, apple cider vinegar, rooibos and other herb teas and kombucha is an essential part of any diet.

Since starting this cleanse, I’ve returned to drinking upwards of 3 cups of green tea a day (one cup per meal) and kombucha at least once every 2 days to replenish my gut biome and restore my body’s acid/alkaline profile.

It just so happens that all of these drinks contain anti-inflammatory properties that are going to reduce the amount of inflammation in your joints and overall body as the week’s progress. This is one of the key elements of dealing with autoimmune diseases like psoriatic arthritis which happen to be inflammatory.

3. Drink Vegetable Juice Daily 

Don’t feel like eating all your veggies? Are you drastically devoid of essential vitamins and minerals but don’t have supplements? Well, juicing vegetables (especially green leafy vegetables) may just be the perfect solution to your vitamin deficiency.

 It is reported that almost 80% of nutrients are preserved and absorbed by your body when consuming vegetable juice in contrast to eating them whole. This occurs because juicing vegetables separates the fiber from the liquid thus resulting in a predigested drink. 

Since your body doesn’t have to break down, extract and digest the fiber from vegetables, it can simply absorb the vitamins and minerals from the liquid at a faster and higher rate.

 I tend to juice a bunch of kale, carrots, beets, cabbage and apples for a sweet and nutritious juice. About 500 ml a day is a great amount to consume at first. As your gut heals, you can add more juice into your diet without experiencing much bloating or gas from the green leafy vegetables. 

If there’s just one thing you take away from this article and implement in your life, let it be the consumption of vegetable juice because I understand that not many people can eat strictly all year round.

 Your diet may and will probably change as other areas of your life change. It’s harder for people to stop eating specific types of foods as it is to add on more. So, if you’re starting now and still cannot find the willpower to cut all the junk food out of your life, try adding on vegetable juice at the very least. Balance out those bad foods with something nutritionally dense like green juice. 

4. Engage In Exercise Regularly

The lymphatic system is responsible for eliminating waste. The problem is that most of us eat and drink too much junk and move too little.

This is extremely taxing on our lymphatic system which is why so many people end up overloaded with toxic waste to the point of it presenting itself in skin conditions and so forth.

Exercise happens to be an effective way to aid the lymphatic system to function at a better rate.

Movement is absolutely critical to a healthy body which is why I’ve made it an obligatory practice to get up from my desk every half hour and walk around my office and stretch. Later in the day, I engage in 30 minutes (minimum) of cardiovascular workouts by either running or jumping rope, an at home-workout system like Focus T25 or lifting weights.

Just watch how much better you feel on the inside and how much better you look on the outside as the weeks start to pass!

Bonus (Obvious) Tip: Drink 2 – 3 Liters Of Water Per Day: 

At the end of the day, none of us would be alive today without water because it is hydrating and rejuvenating. If you want to flush out toxins from your body, aim to drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day without fail. Ditch those sodas and cups of coffee for filtered fresh water!

Concluding Remarks

The human body is absolutely marvelous and it’s ability to regulate itself is unparalleled. Just because you’ve consumed a whole lot of toxic foods over months, if not years, doesn’t mean your body can’t cleanse itself within a very short space of time.

Fuel it with the right foods, reduce those nasty foods, add in antioxidant, antifungal and anti-inflammatory rich sources of food and beverages into your diet and you’ll cleanse your system like never before.

Throw in exercise, proper sleep, adequate water consumption and meditation, you’ll probably end up feeling the best you’ve ever felt in a long time.

Start small and start today. It’s not a complicated process and these 4 ways of cleansing your body will work incredibly.
